From the Bronx to the World
Frank McNally’s life began in a Bronx railroad apartment, the son of Irish immigrants who filled their home with music, humor, and a deep sense of family. As a boy, he spent his days roaming St. Mary’s Park, climbing the big rock that fueled the imagination of neighborhood kids. He was closest to his sister Betty, whose home—crowded with nine children—later became like a second home to Frank.
Even early on, Frank gravitated toward words, stories, and performance. He loved poetry and theater, and he later became known for his off-key; but, enthusiastic singing. His family teased him about his “harp at the studio,” a running joke born from the musical talent of his siblings, even though he himself never played an instrument.
As a young man, Frank worked odd jobs in New York and served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany alongside his brother Tom—an unlikely coincidence that became part of family lore. His service years opened the world to him. He traveled to Italy, Ireland, Holland, and Germany, even breaking his leg in Ireland while trying to ride a bicycle.
A New Chapter in Charlotte
After returning home, a chance extra theater ticket led him to Julie, beginning a courtship filled with long subway rides, late-night conversations on stoops, and evenings at Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Their marriage brought them south to Charlotte NC, where they arrived by bus with little money but a shared sense of adventure.
They built a life through hard work—Frank attending Belmont Abbey College and Julie working at Mercy Hospital. The two explored their new hometown by car, often getting lost and laughing their way back. In Charlotte, Frank became the steady center of a growing family. He was proud of their home and proud that his children pursued education.
Faith and family were the cornerstones of his daily life. At dinnertime, the family would always say a traditional grace, ending with a familiar, heartfelt rhythm: “Please bless nana, pop, Opa, Oma Uncle Tom and John F. Kennedy” (important people in our lives that had passed away).
The Historian and the Mentor
Frank was deeply committed to his church and community. He taught CCD for years, served as a tough but beloved merit badge counselor, and sat on Eagle Scout boards despite never being a camper himself. At home, he worked the yard and cherished the holidays—especially Christmas.
He built a legendary book room filled with thousands of volumes, many marked with notes and excerpts he loved. His fascination with the Civil War led him to Roundtable meetings and a collection later donated in his honor. Because he loved history so deeply, the family spent many summers touring battlefields and forts along the East Coast. He never passed a historic marker on the side of the road that he didn’t want to stop and read. This trait of stopping at battlefields was something that was passed along to his family.
A Lasting Impact
Through all of it, Frank remained what those who loved him remember most: a gentle, curious, good man who found joy in simple things—driving country roads, sharing stories, and giving his time generously to others.
He considered his family to be his greatest achievement in life. Although he passed away over 23 years ago, his presence is still felt daily. His children and grandchildren still find themselves referencing the things he loved, the things he did, and the values he believed in. Frank McNally made a monumental impact on his children’s lives, leaving behind a legacy that continues to guide them.
